Australia’s South Asian diaspora has grown remarkably over the past few decades, with over 1.1 million people of South Asian origin now calling the country home.


In recent years, South Asian films have captured an increasing share of the Australian box office, with blockbuster releases like Pushpa 2: The Rule setting new records for Indian films in the country.


This surge in popularity reflects not only the diaspora’s size and diversity but also their growing demand for stories that resonate with their heritage. As a result, more South Asian movies are hitting Australian theatres than ever before.

 

This week we have quite an interesting lineup of movies in cinemas across Australia from the region:

 

Sitaare Zameen Par

An Eid ul Azha 2025 release, this movie reunites the popular on-screen couple, Humayun Saeed and Mahira Khan, in a rom-com setting. The story revolves around a young man's reaction upon discovering that the girl he married is not interested in marriage. This movie has broken the record for the biggest Eid weekend opening in Pakistan.
