South Asian Festival 2026 | Melbourne

Sunday 26 April 2026 | Federation Square, Melbourne | Free entry | 1pm – 9pm

Federation Square will transform into a pan-South-Asian celebration this Sunday as the South Asian Festival 2026 descends on Melbourne's most iconic public space for a free, all-day event.

Presented by Australia Bangladesh Cultural Exchange Inc. (ABCx), the festival draws together the New Year traditions of an entire region — Pohela Boishakh, Nababarsha, Vaisakhi, Sinhala New Year, Songkran, Khmer New Year and more.

Across the day, a packed main stage will host live music, traditional dance performances and DJ sets representing the breadth of South Asian musical heritage. Food stalls will serve up regional flavours from across the subcontinent, while community stalls offer traditional clothing, jewellery, handicrafts and toys.

The celebrations conclude with a lively ceremonial Mongal Shobhajatra procession — a UNESCO-recognised cultural tradition originating in Bangladesh — before fireworks light up the Melbourne night sky.

For Melbourne's South Asian communities, this is more than a festival; it is a rare moment where Bangladeshi, Indian, Sri Lankan, Nepali and Pakistani Australians occupy the same stage, the same square, the same story. For Melburnians curious about their neighbours' cultures, there is no better, or more accessible, entry point.

Get there early, eat everything, and stay for the fireworks.

Federation Square, corner Flinders and Swanston Streets, Melbourne. Free entry.
