Federation Square, one of Melbourne’s most iconic public spaces, is set to come alive with the spirit of India for the country's independence day celebrations.
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan will lead the community's celebrations of Indian Independence Day on August 15, 2025. The appearance, part of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), marks the 78th anniversary of India’s independence and brings community, film, and culture into dramatic focus in Australia’s multicultural heart.
IFFM 2025, widely recognised as the largest Indian film festival outside India and backed by the Victorian Government, will feature over 75 films in 31 languages, along with vibrant music, dance performances, and star-studded guest appearances from the Indian and Australian creative industries.
IFFM posted on social media about Khan unfurling India's national flag in Melbourne.
“It’s become a cherished tradition to hoist the Indian flag at Federation Square every year as part of IFFM’s Independence Day celebrations."
"This year, adding to the pride, it’ll be none other than global icon AAMIR KHAN leading the ceremony. He will be accompanied by dignitaries from the Victorian government and as well as our festival director Mitu Bhowmick Lange," IFFM said in a post on social media.
A Rare Honour, Says IFFM

For festival director Mitu Bhowmick Lange, the tradition of flag hoisting is “more than just a formal ritual—it’s a deeply emotional and unifying experience.”
She described the moment as one that “fills our hearts with pride."
"The flag hoisting ceremony at IFFM is more than just a formal tradition; it’s a deeply emotional and unifying experience. Seeing the Tiranga unfurl on foreign soil, surrounded by artists, filmmakers, and members of the Indian and Australian communities, fills our hearts with pride. Having Aamir Khan, whose voice, vision and cinema have had a profound impact on generations of film lovers not just in India but globally, lead this moment is truly a rare honour," said Mitu Bhowmick Lange.
Attendees can expect to catch other celebrities, including filmmakers, local leaders, and creative talents such as Shoojit Sircar, Tillotama Shome, Jim Sarbh, Onir and comedian Vir Das.
Bollywood actor, filmmaker, and storyteller Aamir Khan is set to headline the 16th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne as the official Chief Guest.
A specially curated retrospective will chart Khan’s journey from his breakthrough in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak through genre-defining hits like Lagaan, Taare Zameen Par, PK, and Dangal. The tribute culminates in an exclusive screening of his latest film, Sitaare Zameen Par, followed by a live discussion featuring Khan, director RS Prasanna, and Aparna Purohit, CEO of Aamir Khan Films.
