NSW Police have arrested two people after a 20-year-old Sydney-based cricketer of Pakistani origin Muhammad Kashif died in a car crash in the early hours of Wednesday.
Kashif was a passenger in a blue Audi, which was involved in an allegedly illegal street race, that ran off the road into the Audley Weir on the Hacking River in the Royal National Park in Sydney.
Tributes poured in for Kashif, who was studying electrical engineering, from the South Asian cricket community. “Kashif was more than just a talented cricketer — he was a true gentleman of the game,” Great Hits Abbottabad CC wrote on Facebook.
“Kash, we will miss your charisma, your banter and most of all your friendship. Simply gone too soon, rest in peace dear friend, never to be forgotten,” Kashif’s team Mount Pritchard - Southern Districts Cricket Club wrote on Facebook.
GoFundMe Set Up To Help Sydney Cricketer's Family
A GoFundMe set up to help Kashif’s family, who are residents of Casula in south-west Sydney, raised over $55,000 within a day.
“We are raising funds in memory of Muhammad Kashif, a devoted son and the eldest sibling to his two sisters,” Kashif’s friend Najiullah Shafiqi wrote on the campaign page.
“Kashif worked tirelessly to support his family and was a pillar of strength in their lives. His sudden passing has left a deep void, both emotionally and financially.”
“During this incredibly difficult time, we are coming together to support his family. The funds raised will go toward covering funeral expenses and helping ease the financial burden on his loved ones as they navigate life without him,” Shafiqui wrote.
