Labor MP Julian Hill has unleashed a blistering attack on opposition figures Andrew Hastie and Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, accusing them of “taking the coward’s route” by fuelling anti-migrant sentiment and parroting “extremist, racist talking points” in what he called a “race to the bottom on race and migration.”

Speaking at the National Migration Conference in Melbourne on Friday — and in a follow-up radio interview — Hill sharpened his attack on the Liberal Party's stance, accusing them of regurgitating “extremist and racist talking points”

“Contrary to ridiculous claims, including by actual Nazis and most of the Liberal Party, Australia does not suffer from mass migration,” he declared. “Our borders are tightly controlled, and our migration system is highly targeted, orderly and operates with very high integrity.”

'Pauline Hanson Lives In Their Head Rent-Free'

Hill named Hastie and Price  and said that “the Liberal Party of today is not the Liberal Party of old.”

“ It's not just a few extremists or populists – Hastie, Price and their cabal blowing the dog whistle now: the Liberals are all taking the coward's route,” Hill said.

“Both terrified of yet cuddling up to One Nation, calling for "massive" cuts to migration, but never saying how or where that should occur. Pauline Hanson now lives rent-free inside their heads. This is today's Liberal Party, it's who they are now.”

Hill went further, posing pointed questions to the Opposition: “Which industries are they planning to cripple first if they slash migration—horticulture, aged care, or hospitality? Which nursing homes will they close? Which rural towns will they tell there’ll be no more GPs or nurses?”

Migration Falling, Australia Is Not Europe or The USA

Hill pushed back against claims of “mass migration,” highlighting that the permanent migration intake remains unchanged at 185,000 places — exactly the same as last year.

“Many states and territories say that’s overly conservative when you look at an ageing population, pressures on family reunion and record-low unemployment,” he said.

On Net Overseas Migration (NOM), Hill said figures were already declining sharply, “falling by over 40 per cent since the peak, and by 36 per cent in the past year, trending back towards historically normal levels.”

He stressed that Australia’s migration program is “orderly and tightly controlled,” unlike systems in Europe or the United States.

Andrew Hastie And Jacinta Price In Trouble Over Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric

Andrew Hastie and Jacinta Nampijinpa Price recently found themselves at the centre of major controversies within the Liberal Party over their hardline positions on migration.

Hastie resigned from the Shadow Cabinet last week after a dispute over immigration policy. He has drawn sharp criticism for claiming that high immigration is making Australians feel like “strangers in their own home”—language reminiscent of infamous anti-migrant rhetoric from Britain’s far right.

Price has also courted controversy, having been sacked from the shadow frontbench after refusing to apologise for disparaging remarks about Indian-Australians—comments that sent shockwaves through Liberal ranks and prompted damage control measures from party leadership.

‘Nothing more Australian than a migrant’

In his speech, Hill reminded delegates — and listeners in his interview — that multiculturalism is central to the national identity. “Except for our First Nations people, everyone’s come from somewhere. The vast majority of Australians cherish Australia’s multicultural character,” he said.

“Contrary to ridiculous claims, Australia does not suffer from mass migration. Our borders are tightly controlled, and our migration system operates with very high levels of integrity.”

He mocked the idea that migration cuts would solve housing pressures, noting that large portions of the program are made up of partner visas.

“Husbands, wives — they come and live in the same bedroom. Are they saying people can no longer fall in love with someone from overseas?” Hill asked.

Crackdown On Migration Agents

Hill also confirmed a crackdown on “crooked” migration agents who exploit clients through fraudulent protection visa advice and unlawful practices.

A multi-agency task force has already begun targeting operators who defrauded vulnerable people of more than $1.4 million. “These scams create real victims—it’s equivalent to modern slavery,” Hill warned.

He said new regulations will strengthen registration, English and professional standards, and raise penalties for unlawful immigration assistance before several governing instruments expire in 2026.
