A 63-year-old Indian-Australian man was punched in the face and called racist slurs last week at the Westfield Shopping Centre in Parramatta in Sydney’s West. NSW Police said they have arrested a 22-year-old woman and charged her for the attack.

NSW Premier Chris Minn led the condemnation of the unprovoked attack. “I am deeply concerned by reports of an assault on an Indian-Australian man at Westfield Parramatta, including allegations the attack was racially motivated,” Minns said in a statement on Wednesday, while expressing support for the victim and his family.

“No one in our state should ever be targeted or intimidated because of their background or identity. Racism has no place in our state and we will always call it out when we see it,” Minns said, adding, We will continue working with community leaders, local organisations and police to ensure people of all backgrounds feel safe, respected and supported in every part of New South Wales.”

Man Punched In The Head In Unprovoked Attack in WestFilef Parramatta

NSW Police said they were called to the shopping centre in the evening around 7 on November 10, 2025.

“Officers attached to Parramatta Police Area Command were told a 63-year-old man was assaulted by an unknown woman, before she left in a vehicle,” the police said in a statement. “NSW Ambulance treated the man for a minor injury to the head.”

Following investigations, the police arrested the woman in Westmead and took her to Parramatta Police Station on Friday, November 14, 2025.

“She was charged with common assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm,” police said.

Woman Hurled Racial Slurs: Witnesses

The Daily Telegraph reported that the woman Mikayla Smith appeared before the Parramatta court on November 16. She was denied bail and the court ordered that she be transferred to a mental health facility for assessment.

According to eyewitnesses, the woman punched the man and shouted, “F*** off, Indian. Go back to where you came from.”

A Reddit user who witnessed the attack posted about it on social media. “Today, late afternoon. Witnessed an old Indian man being punched in the head by a white female, accompanied by her male friend.”

“There were racist obscenities said by them too. The Indian man's forehead was bleeding. I believe they got the man urgent care, and the CCTV systems are everywhere so they will be identified soon. Looks like there's a surge in these kinds of attacks. Just be safe out there.”

Surge In Attack On South Asians

Gurpinder (name changed), the victim, a community leader, has lived in Australia for over 20 years, was walking through the shopping centre on his way to a council meeting when he was accosted by the woman and punched in the face.

Gurpinder told the Sydney Morning Herald that the woman shouted racial slurs and the attack was “purely a hate crime.”

In a video posted on social media with Federal MP for Parramatta Andrew Charlton, Gurpinder said the attack on him was not an “isolated case” and called out the recent surge in attacks on the South Asian community in Australia.

“This has happened to others in the past two months,” said Gurpinder. “Some people are making a veiled attack on people from the sub continent and trying to create hatred and division in the community.”

Federal MP Charlton called out the “unacceptable racist assault” on Gurpinder.

“We are a proud, multi-cultural nation,” said Charlton, adding, “I want everyone to know that there is no place for violence, hatred or racism here, or anywhere in Australia.”
